Convicted Child Molester Murdered Behind Bars After Serving Just Days on His Life Sentence

Agustin Duran, 66, was facing what was essentially a life sentence behind bars. He arrived on July 2. His life ended on July 8 at the hands of another inmate.

According to The Associated Press, Duran had arrived at the prison in Wasco, California, just north of Bakersfield, after being convicted in Los Angeles County of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 years old.

The Sacramento Bee reports that he was facing 55 years to life with the possibility of parole, a sentence long enough that he was unlikely to see outside of prison walls for the remainder of his lifetime.

He had begun serving the sentence at Wasco State Prison. KMPH-TV reports that the mission of the prison “is to provide short-term housing necessary to process, classify and evaluate new inmates physically and mentally to determine their security level, program requirements, and appropriate institutional placement.”

Duran didn’t make it past that step in the system.

Reports say that Duran was assaulted at 7:20 p.m. on July 6. The incident happened in the day room at Wasco.

“According to Wasco State Prison officials, an alarm was sounded after 19-year-old inmate Andres Ayon began punching 66-year-old inmate Agustin Duran in the face and upper torso,” KMPH reported.

Pepper spray was used to break up the fight.

“Prison officials say Ayon was placed in handcuffs and taken to a temporary holding cell. Duran was placed on a gurney and transported to a hospital.”

Duran was airlifted to an unnamed hospital at 8:23 p.m. He was pronounced dead less than 24 hours later, at 4:48 p.m. on Sunday.

Ayon, officials say, had been brought into Wasco on June 22. He had been scheduled to serve six years behind bars, thanks to convictions for second-degree robbery and use of a deadly weapon.

He’s going to be spending a lot more time in jail now, one thinks.

No motive was given for Ayon’s attack.

However, it’s not uncommon for other prisoners to target those convicted of pedophilia. Even one of America’s most infamous convicted pedophiles — former Subway spokesmanJared Fogle — was beaten up behind bars, apparently by a 61-year-old inmate who felt that Fogle was being lionized by the other pedophiles behind bars.
