Tenants evicted from social housing for serious criminal behaviour like human and drug trafficking now face a five-year ban, Ontario Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Steve Clark says.
Social housing providers, like Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC), have been given the discretion to bar former occupants who continue to pose a risk to other tenants, Clark said.
Mayor John Tory has long called for changes that would prevent dangerous or disruptive tenants from quickly reapplying for and getting another Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) unit.
This move won’t stop the gun violence that has plagued Toronto’s social housing complexes, but it’s another tool to keep the bad actors out, Tory said.
There remains the problem of troublemakers who illegally take over the units of legal tenants, often seniors.
