Thunberg is a scold — and usually a sour, angry scold. “How dare you,” she hectored world leaders at a recent session of the United Nations. “You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words.”
Um, didn’t you sail to New York on a 60-foot, $1.5-million yacht? Yes, yes, boohoo, the Malizia II didn’t have showers or toilets for its two-week voyage. But that’s not because it’s some lean, “green” sailing machine. It’s because it’s designed for day racing in hyperexpensive yachting competitions.
Oh, and its construction includes lots of polycarbon fibre and aluminum alloys. It’s not made of recycled milk cartons held together with organic, fair-trade hemp rope.
Still, why has Thunberg attracted a martyr’s following of 2.5 million? Why do world leaders not merely meet with her but sit meekly by while she upbraids them for doing too little to stop climate change?
She even rebuked our own Justin Trudeau for failing the environment and he has done all he can to shut down Alberta’s energy industry and halt the national economy.
