Driver of pickup truck who drove into crowd, killing 10, dead in New Orleans as FBI finds IED on scene

The driver in the New Orleans attack that killed at least 10 is now dead, Channel 2 reports. The driver of a pickup truck drove into a crowd of New Year's revelers on busy Bourbon and Canal Streets before getting out of the vehicle and opening fire on that crowd. FBI agents also said that an improvised explosive device was found in the area.

The incident occured in the early morning hours of New Year's Day, at about 3:15 am. At least 10 were killed, 30 injured, including 2 police officers who were wounded in the gun fight. The truck was an electric vehicle which appeared to have a flagpole on the back. A jacket was seen hanging from that pole while earlier photos showed a "black flag" hanging from it, per The Daily Mail.

The FBI was requested by local authorities and that agency has set up a command center to investigate the incident. They discovered improvised explosive devices, Fox News reports. At about 8:30 am, a "small explosion" went off in the French Quarter which was a detonation by the bomb squad. New Orleans police said the driver had engaged in "intentional behavior."

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said the city had been the victim of a "terrorist attack," but FBI Special Agent Aletha Duncan had said previously that it was "not a terrorist attack." Later, the FBI said in a release that they were investigating the attack "as an act of terrorism."
