City of Montreal to pay $51,000 fine for failing to protect the environment

The City of Montreal was fined $51,000 for breaching an Act protecting the environment.

Montreal was found guilty of two offences under the Environment Quality Act, on Dec. 13, 2017.

The city had failed to obtain authorization from the provincial environment department before proceeding with excavation and storage of contaminated soil on two separate occasions, Nov. 1 and 8, 2013, the Quebec Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, and Action against Climate Change, said in a statement on Friday.

The City had contravened section 22 (1) and section 31 of the Environment Quality Act.
