Grizzly bear 122, commonly referred to as The Boss, is back.

In a Facebook post, Banff National Park says bear 122 is believed to be the one spotted in a video Rachel Hackney shared online — the season’s first sighting.

Hackney said she was driving along Highway 1A March 24 roughly 17 kilometres west of Banff when she pulled over for a quick pit stop.

About a minute later, Hackney said she saw something emerge from the bushes across the river from her location.

“He looked pretty big to me, I honestly had no idea who The Boss was until someone pulled up behind me and told me,” said Hackney.

“I really lucked out to see him. It seemed like a good viewpoint and I was there for no longer than a minute before he stumbled out of the woods. He looked clumsy — it was either post-hibernation or he was having as much of a difficult time walking through the snow as the rest of us are.”

Hackney said she felt really lucky to get the footage.

“I had no idea that was the first sighting … I can’t believe how lucky I got to see him,” said Hackney.
