Have TFC supporters gone too far when it comes to Toronto’s Liberty Village?

Some residents seem to think so as the enthusiastic soccer fans take over the condo-heavy downtown neighbourhood going to and from nearby BMO Field on game days.

It’s not like they’re exactly football hooligans as in violent, or even disorderly.

There’s just a lot of them, and they’re usually drunk, loud – perhaps banging a drum, singing a song, or carrying a flare – and identifiable by the TFC’s signature red scarves.

Residents often stay inside or leave on game days to avoid the pedestrian and vehicle gridlock and it’s almost impossible to get a seat a local bar or restaurant, they complain.

However, TFC has been playing at BMO Field for a decade so one wonders why there are complaints now?

One solution may be a new pedestrian-cycle bridge directly from Liberty Village to King Street that might ease up congestion on the two main access streets of Strachan and Atlantic.

The city says construction on the $11.5 million bridge will begin early this summer.
