After a vandal smashed more than 25 windows at St. Mary and St. Moses Coptic Orthodox Church Friday night, Joseph Tawfik is thankful there isn’t more damage.

“Thank God he didn’t reach the stained glass at the top, because that is irreplaceable,” Tawfik, the church’s treasurer, said Monday.

Windsor police responded to a report of property damage in progress around 11 p.m. on Friday night, and arrested a 57-year-old Windsor man at the scene. He is charged with mischief over $5000. Police would not release the man’s name.

“If the police didn’t arrive, he was going to keep going,” Tawfik said of the vandal. “He had a lot of time to do this.”

The vandal broke every basement window around the Ottawa Street building, as well as glass in the front and garage doors. Broken glass still litters the building’s perimeter.
Most rooms in the church basement have glass shards in them, too, including the bathrooms and kitchen. Congregation members volunteered to clean up the mess, and have already filled six garbage cans.
