Vancouver school trustees will address future of Cecil Rhodes sign at West Side elementary school

Antiracists in Vancouver remain outraged that a plaque saying “Cecil Rhodes School” has not been removed from the L’École Bilingue basketball court.

Rhodes founded the De Beers diamond company.

In the eyes of many, he helped set South Africa on a path toward apartheid.

In 1895, Rhodes also tried to overthrow the president of the Transvaal, which laid a foundation for the Boer War. This conflict led to the creation of barbed-wire concentration camps to house more than 200,000 civilians.

The decision not to take down the plaque from L’École Bilingue, until now, led to the following tweetstorm by community activist Stephanie Allen.View image on Twitter

Wanted to give an update on the matter @VSB39 re Cecil Rhodes monument at L’Ecole Bilingue. Follow me for a sec, Imma break down how systemic anti-Black racism persists in government institutions in 2019 in Canada. /1#BCEd #VanPoli #RhodesMustFall775:42 PM – Jun 23, 201961 people are talking about thisTwitter Ads info and privacy

First, representatives from the Black community were denied the opportunity to speak at the June 19 Facilities Planning Committee by chair Wong b/c delegates did not meet deadline. You may argue “thats just following rules” but whose rules & why? /2

stephanie allen@BuiltJustice

Given the topic, those most harmed by a CR monument should have been prioritized but since @VSB39 doesnt have an equity/anti-racism policy, Wong used his power to deny. Important to note Wong is on the record in the Tyee saying “I think it should remain” https://thetyee.ca/News/2019/06/06/Apartheid-Father-Place-School/ … 3165:42 PM – Jun 23, 2019Twitter Ads info and privacyWhy One School Keeps a Special Place for a Father of Apartheid | The TyeeL’École Bilingue used to be called Cecil Rhodes. So here is a School Trustee using their power to prioritize a monument to African genocide vs those most harmed by such a monument. Also at the mtg pro-monument speakers’ remarks included pro-imperialism/colonialism statements that bordered on hate speech. Watch the vid. /4

stephanie allen@BuiltJustice

His speech wasnt sanctioned nor cautioned but when those of us arguing for removal had a visceral reaction to the dehumanizing comments we were reprimanded by Wong. Think of that for a moment: govt body silencing targets of racism while pro-white supremacy speech happens /5205:42 PM – Jun 23, 2019Twitter Ads info and privacySee stephanie allen’s other Tweets

Its important to note here that Canada copied elements of SA’s apartheid policies (set in motion by CR) in developing policies to oppress Indigenous peoples, something we are beginning to reject /6 https://troymedia.com/2018/09/11/indigenous-apartheid-system-canada/ …Canada’s persistent apartheid systemCanadians passionately denounced South Africa while not noticing that we had an apartheid system of our own. A few of us from the Black community met w Trustees on June 20 on invitation by @VSB39 Chair Fraser. It was an opportunity for an discussion on the CR monument: How did we get here? Who made the decision in 2017 to install it? Why is a board motion necessary for change? #BCEd /795:42 PM – Jun 23, 2019Twitter Ads info and privacySee stephanie allen’s other Tweets

One of our delegation asked: is there any instance that you could imagine a monument to Hitler being debated? If not, why is this up for discussion!? Is CR record being disputed? If not, where is the duty of care to racialized/Black students? What of safety & security? /8

stephanie allen@BuiltJustice

Or a harassment-free environment? What damage is being done to Black students when they witness @VSB39 admin and trustees approach a monument to African exploitation & murder as a debate w valid arguments on “both sides”? /9175:42 PM – Jun 23, 2019Twitter Ads info and privacySee stephanie allen’s other Tweets

One trustee made the argument for “not burying history” so I suggested we look at Germany’s example of how they teach WW2 history, made systemic changes, all without celebrating perpetrators of the Holocaust via public art. /10

stephanie allen@BuiltJustice

We have a commitment in principle from Chair Fraser to continue the conversation with the Black community to work towards systemic changes. Changes that would hopefully prevent:

a) decisions that got the CR monument installed in 2017 (somewhere this was budgeted and approved)165:42 PM – Jun 23, 2019Twitter Ads info and privacySee stephanie allen’s other Tweets

stephanie allen@BuiltJustice · Jun 23, 2019Replying to @BuiltJustice

b) failure of educators & admin to learn the history (is google still free?) when it was initially raised by the community and parents

c) failure in duty of care to Black students who are being exposed to the monument AND the pro-monument arguments that dehumanize their lives/11

stephanie allen@BuiltJustice

d) ongoing neglect & failure in leadership by the principal who said she’s “neutral” on a monument to a WS she decided not to educate herself on

e) letting it persist so that instead of a simple facilities decision to remove a monument to WS, its become a board decision /12145:42 PM – Jun 23, 2019Twitter Ads info and privacySee stephanie allen’s other Tweets

I will NOT be @ Monday’s Board mtg & reject legitimizing something that should be the easiest decision facing @VSB39—removing a monument to CR, genocidal white supremacist. /15

stephanie allen@BuiltJustice

Black ppl shouldn’t be asked to express their pain to win empathy or argue for basic dignity from institutions or governing bodies yet here we are. In 2019. /16335:42 PM – Jun 23, 2019Twitter Ads info and privacySee stephanie allen’s other Tweets
