Intended to stem a foul tide of public urination complaints, a glass-walled public toilet plaguing a popular Edmonton nightlife destination has instead become a popular go-to for those with more on their minds than relieving themselves.
The Edmonton Sun reported Thursday that the public lavatory — constructed in 2012 on Whyte Ave. and Gateway Blvd. — has become a magnet of complaints and a regular stop by members of the city’s police force, who say it’s regularly used as a shelter for vagrants, a place to drink alcohol or as a shooting gallery for illegal drug users.
As complaints continue to mount, Edmonton’s public services committee was told Wednesday that weekend bar patrons aren’t even using the washroom, opting instead to risk $500 fines by continuing to pee rough.
